“An addictively readable memoir …. By the end of the book you will be crying and laughing at once, and applauding Michele Rosenthal for her courage.” ~Jessica Stern, Expert on trauma and terror, Author of Denial: A Memoir of Terror and Terror in the Name of God.
We’re all individual in our traumas, but completely universal in our post-trauma experience. What you’re feeling many others do also. While you have to find your own unique healing path, there are some things every single one of us needs along the recovery journey: education, compassion, creativity, ideas, hope and belief to name a few. These things are critical in developing your personal strategy for moving forward after trauma. They’re also the cornerstones of my trauma recovery memoir.
BEFORE THE WORLD INTRUDED: Conquering the Past and Creating the Future, is one woman’s quest to triumph over trauma — and the very unexpected way she did it. At the age of thirteen Michele Rosenthal survived such a rare, life-threatening illness none of her doctors had actually seen a case. Out of the hospital and making a full recovery, she believed if she only looked toward the future she could escape the trauma in her past. Twenty-five years later, however, the young girl had become a woman imprisoned by memories, fear and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.
In a bid to reclaim her life and heal her soul Michele boldly left the world she knew in search of a self she could barely imagine. From New York City to South Florida she traveled on an odyssey that took her from the depths of despair to the heights of joy, from her kitchen floor to the dance floor, from a child frozen in helplessness to a woman who is powerful, courageous and free. In her transformation lie the seeds for anyone who wants to conquer the past and create the future. This transcendent book shows what can happen when you discover who you are and then choose who you most deeply want to be.
“Before the World Intruded is stunning in its intimacy… Michele’s courage in deciding to face her PTSD and heal it is the message of this story.”~William Krill, Jr., MSPC, author, Gentling: A Practical Guide to Treating PTSD in Abused Children

“What a gift and what an inspiring lesson to those professionals and clients who believe PTSD does not exist and/or that PTSD recovery is not possible!” ~ Sandey Meyerson Perline, Licensed Clinical Social Worker, The Pederson-Krag Center
I normally hate reading about other people’s pain — I tend to take it on empathetically and feel dragged down by it — but I couldn’t stop reading this book… I was hooked… Rosenthal speaks with searing honesty and clarity, presenting a vivid, concise picture….Two things I learned from the book: That the shame I feel when PTSD takes over and I “fail” are common to all PTSD sufferers (which I think released one layer of self-loathing) and that there is actual hope of recovery, if you really persevere… I was left feeling comforted and encouraged, with much guilt released: A rare gift I am still cherishing. Whether you have PTSD or not, this is a remarkable, compelling book by a courageous and vibrant survivor.
“Before the World Intruded” is not just a book on unspeakable trauma and the journey of survival, it is an essential PTSD resource. It is an educational read for anyone who has been touched by trauma, loves someone who struggles with PTSD, as well as for health professionals who diagnose and treat trauma related disorders. Rosenthal’s story is moving, inspirational and a hopeful reminder that through awareness comes recovery.
Michele Rosenthal is a gifted writer, a courageous and spirited woman … “Before the World Intruded” takes the reader from the pain and agony of her life altering event, through years of suffering with post traumatic disorder to her triumphant transformation as her indomitable Spirit rises to help her choose life. … Even if you are not a survivor of trauma or someone dealing with PTSD, Michele’s story will touch your heart and enlighten you to the world of a trauma survivor and the drive of the Spirit to prevail and create a life of joy, freedom and be of service to others. Even though I was pretty far along in my own trauma recovery when I ‘met’ Michele through her radio show, “Your Life After Trauma”, her [book] has energized me and fueled me to journey on and stop at nothing until I am totally symptom free. She has clarified so much of my own journey – the struggles and the triumphs. Michele’s story is one that brings hope, possibility, and inspiration to trauma survivors weaving clinical information about PTSD into the wonderful plot driven odyssey that Michele shares with openness, brutal honesty, integrity and grace. It’s a page turner…
I wasn’t sure what to expect when I cracked the first page and by the end of the second I could not put it down. A medical memoir, yes, a spiritual journey, yes, inspiration for anyone dealing with PTSD, yes, an uplifting book with a happy ending.
I could not put the book down. The best book I have read in a long time. This should be the next book you buy. I highly recommend this book. It is enlightening and inspirational.
Michele is one of those rare people who inspire you to be all that you can be. This book shows you her spirit. The websites and her new career are her rallying calls to battle. PTSD doesn’t have to be forever.
