After experiencing trauma, it can be difficult to believe that you have a purpose. It can be so much work to heal that the thought of what to do afterward isn’t even something you can fathom. Indeed, for many survivors “the future” is just a blank white screen. What I notice is that the screen fills in itself when we stay present and put one foot in front of the other following whatever impulse pulls us forward. For me, the impulse that pulled me forward was the desire to help others move through the journey I had just completed.
After I found my path to healing, it didn’t take long for me to know that I wanted to help others, too. I had learned so much about the pitfalls of recovery and healing, plus what can help the path be less bumpy, that I wanted to offer that knowledge in the hopes it could help others move more quickly toward wellness. It is amazing the information we can find together when we pool our resources.
Just like me, there are countless other trauma survivors who have also dedicated their lives to helping others. This week on Changing Direction I will be chatting with Dr. Kate Hudgins, PhD and Rose Caiola-Musacchia – both survivors, both extraordinary women who have made the choice to use their traumatic past to help others build a positive future.
