Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy

Maurette HansonThere are soooo many ways to overcome PTSD. Along your journey you will find yourself looking for different kinds of approaches and treatments depending on where you are in your process. One thing I didn’t have a chance to try but I’ve heard fantastic things about is equine facilitated therapy. I have colleagues who are trauma survivors who were so incredibly helped by this kind of treatment that they went on and got trained to facilitate it themselves! Now, that’s a ringing endorsement

Technically, equine facilitated psychotherapy involves working with horses in both mounted and unmounted exercises. Experienced in the barn setting, the collaboration between you and a horse can provide empowering tools for building self-awareness and self-esteem, boundaries (really necessary in PTSD recovery!), plus a sense of personal responsibility and accountability.

Feeling a little skeptical about how playing with an animal can lead to recovery progress? Check out the areas that clinical evidence supports the effectiveness of this type of treatment:

  • Anxiety disorders
  • Conduct disorders
  • Low self esteem
  • Autism Depression
  • Memory impairment
  • Brain Injury
  • Eating disorders
  • Learning disorders
  • Childhood neglect
  • Grief and loss
  • Substance abuse
  • Childhood abuse
  • Attention deficit disorder
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder

Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy might be right for you if you feel you could benefit from improving and developing your strengths in :

  • self-esteem, self-awareness, social skills, problem-solving skills, self-confidence
  • concentration & focus, frustration tolerance, communication skills
  • trust & respect, goal-setting skills
  • Following directions, improved balance, coordination, flexibility
