Healing Thought of the Week: Envision Yourself More Than a Survivor
Sunday, January 22nd, 2012 • PTSD Healing Thought of the Week •
One of the meanings I came away from my trauma with was: “If something like this happens again, I’d better be ready for it!”
That meant that I was constantly testing myself and my body, doing self-destructive things just to see if I and my body could withstand them. I thought to myself,
Each time I prove I still have the strength to survive, I prove the fact of myself to myself. I draw out and define an identity I can actually envision.

Without constant trauma I couldn’t even see myself! How do you see yourself? Can you see the whole person, the one who’s so much more than a survivor?
You have enormous healing potential. The goal is learning to access it.
Dig deep. You can do this. I believe in you!

Hi Michelle, I have a health phobia ( some call it hypochondria) . The origin of my fears is my mother taking us to the doctor for every sniffle and having to tell her over and over that her kids were ok! Now an adult, I am terrified of going to the doctor and every little thing on my body is potential for a medical disaster. Can you relate and/or have any suggestions?
@Cheri- Yes, I can relate, what you’re saying makes total sense. I wish I could offer some quick fix. This has to do with a belief system that’s been put in place. To begin shifting it: 1) identify the belief as a sentence. 2) Decide what belief you would rather hold. 3) Find ways to incorporate that belief into your daily life, i.e. thru affirmations, check-ins, minduflness, etc.
