Find Language and Choose Words
Sunday, January 15th, 2012 • PTSD Healing Thought of the Week •
There’s more than one way to approach trauma recovery. Take me, for example: I spent a lot of time in therapy but still couldn’t really get a handle on
leaving my trauma in the past. That’s when I decided to start writing about it.
Here’s what happened:
Writing, however, was good for me. It gave me a focus outside my physical discomfort and limitation. It gave me something in which to bury the emotional angst I carried and also a place to explore how and when and why to find language and choose words.
Ultimately, writing about my trauma lead me to write my trauma recovery memoir, BEFORETHE WORLD INTRUDED. Happily, it also led me to really take charge of my recovery.
It’s not necessary for you to write a whole book for writing to be helpful in your own process. You can get enormous benefits out of journaling your feelings, writing poetry, or any type ofprocess that allows you to take what’s in your head and put it down in the world outside.

You have enormous healing potential. The goal is learning to access it.
Dig deep. You can do this. I believe in you!
