Police, PTSD and Suicide Prevention

Friday, December 9th, 2011 • PTSD Guest Post: Professional Perspective

An interview with a source who preferred to remain anonymous, this guest post about PTSD related police suicide applies to the general population, too….

1. What is the rate of PTSD-related police suicides? (as far as you know, in any demographic that you are familiar with)PTSD, Police, Professional Perspective

On a REPORTED death, only about 22 states ask the employment of the individual weather it is a natural death or classified as  a suicide.   Looking at police Suicides this is at the low end; two police officers commit suicide every 17 hours, this is active, retired or the officer is up on chargers, some departments will not report it as a suicide because when a person commits suicide the insurance company will not pay the family INSURANCE BENEFITS and in most cases no other benefits go to the family so the department will cover it up as a ACCIDENTAL shooting.

I’m not sure why your source would want to remain anonymous other than because they’ve given you some erroneous information. Two recent studies have shown the suicides are happening about every 60 hours, not 17. Many of the signs and symptoms given above are inaccurate; in truth, they are similar to those evidenced by most potential suicide victims, with the greatest danger being the fact that police officers mask the signs far more effectively and are thus at far greater risk.

For more accurate information on police suicides and to obtain a copy of the study, visit http://www.badgeoflife.com/suicides.php Additional valuable information on this topic can be obtained at In Harm’s Way, at http://policesuicide.spcollege.edu/

Thanks for the info, Andy! It takes all of us as a community to build the right resources and vet each other. I really appreciate your taking the time to set the record straight.
