Healing Thought of the Week: Attitude is Free
Sunday, October 23rd, 2011 • PTSD Healing Thought of the Week •
In the foreword to my forthcoming PTSD recovery memoir, Before the World Intruded: Conquering the Past and Creating the Future, Dr. Alex Pattakos writes,
Michele has learned through first-hand experience that, in all situations, no matter how desperate they may appear or actually be, that she always had (and always will have) the ultimate freedom to choose her attitude.
Dr. Pattakos believes strongly that choosing our attitude has a lot to do with how we make meaning, find resilience and move forward after trauma. (Did you hear him on YOUR LIFE AFTER TRAUMA talking about exactly this topic?)
The whole idea here isn’t to minimize what you feel or why you feel it. No, the point is to recognize that no matter how you feel or why, you always have the choice in how you will respond.
Quick example: For a really, really long time I responded to my trauma through the attitude of a victim. It’s no surprise I didn’t overcome PTSD that way. When I switched my attitude to that of a victor, which is what my memoir is all about, that’s when I finally engaged in my recovery and, after several failed attempts, finally broke through and overcame symptoms of PTSD.
Attitude is free. It’s your own internal resource. How much are you using it?
You have enormous healing potential. The goal is learning to access it.
Dig deep. You can do this. I believe in you!
