PTSD Healing Thought of the Week: It is Possible to Conquer the Past
Sunday, July 4th, 2010 • PTSD Healing Thought of the Week •
PTSD begins with our experience of a traumatic event. Our interpretation of that event has a dramatic impact on how we feel about
it afterward; on whether or not we can let it go. It’s completely normal to see ourselves as survivors, often even as victims who have unfairly suffered an ordeal.
In order to heal, however, we need to take a step back and begin to process the event(s) in another way. In THE DARK SIDE OF THE LIGHT CHASERS: Reclaiming your Power, Creativity, Brilliance and Dreams, Debbie Ford speaks at length about the concept of interpretation. She writes,
Everything that occurs in our world is an objective event. It has no inherent meaning. Each of us sees the world through different lenses, so each of us will perceive a particular incident differently. It’s our perceptions and our interpretations that affect our emotions not theincident itself.
If you allow her words to enter your day, what she’s saying here is that we hold within ourselves the process necessary for change. This idea can be the beginning of recovery.
It is possible to conquer the past and create the future – the first step is choosing to take the journey.
