The German dramatic opera composer and theorist, Richard Wagner, said:
Joy is not in things; it is in us.
This is an important concept for survivors. Joy is inherent in us and, so being, it can never be taken away – no matter what we survive.
One of the goals of healing post-traumatic stress must to be to reconnect to our capacity for joy.
Indeed, it can be the very element that bridges the gap between trauma and peace.
