USING IMAGERY RESCRIPTING AND REPROCESSING THERAPY (IRRT) TO HEAL PTSD
If you’d like to participate on the call and ask Bob questions about this technique you may phone in: 347.647.1847.
Curious to know more about Bob and IRRT? Read this article recently published about the work he does — and the success he sees in healing PTSD.
There was an intersting article in the Journal of Cognitive Psychology about imagery rescripting and its use in therapy. The article suggests:
The use of imagery in psychotherapy has received surprisingly little attention from researchers despite its long history in psychology and the significance of imagery in a number of psychological disorders. One procedure warranting increased attention is imagery rescripting, an imagery technique in which an image is modified in some way to decrease distress. Imagery rescripting is relatively new with a small but growing empirical base. This article briefly reviews hypothesized mechanisms for therapeutic change via imagery techniques, emphasizing imagery rescripting, and how they might be relevant in the treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

In raising awareness about invisible illness it’s important to also raise awareness about what heals invisible illness! Anyone tried IRRT? Let us know what you think about it by leaving a comment!

I would highly recommend EMDR as a valid and highly useful process in healing PTSD. Imagery tends to be seen as primarily a subset of “talk therapy,” where EMDR has been known to reach a deeper and more meaningful level of healing quicker.
Hi, Mark – Thanks for sharing your thoughts. As a trauma survivor who used EMDR (to no avail) in my healing process I think I would add to your idea that everyone needs to find what resonates with them in the healing process without seeing methods linked together that don’t necessarily go operate in a similar way.
Talk therapy doesn’t use imagery the way rescripting does, and imagery – for example – in the way hypnosis uses it is not even close to being a ‘subset’ of talk therapy. I think all of the information processing techniques (EMDR, EFT, TFT, and TAT), plus NLP and hypnosis reach a deep and meaningful place depending on their administration by the practitioner and the desire and willingness of the survivor to engage in aspects of any particular method.
