PTSD Healing Thought: Self-Creation

Monday, July 27th, 2009 • PTSD Healing Thought of the Week

miles-davisIt’s impossible not to admire and respect the work and music of the pioneer Miles Davis. He was an inspired creator.

Think music just came to him out of thin air? Think again! Davis worked at it all the time:

I’m always thinking about creating. My future starts when I wake up every morning . . . Every day I find something creative to do with my life.

In order to heal PTSD we have to recreate ourselves — trauma has created one version, in healing it’s time to create another.

We take back our power when we give our imagination free reign.

We take back our power when we wake up every morning seeing who we want to become tomorrow instead of feeling stuck in who we are today.

It was such an important moment for me, when I realised that I could really and truly be free of PTSD. The nature PTSD is to keep you in a loop, so its only natural to believe you are stuck there.

However, it wasn’t enough to be told I could do it – break free and heal. I had to want it, and I had to be ready to move on. No one else can give you that, but my wish for anyone dealing with PTSD is that they are surrounded by people who support them with positive messages of what’s possible until they’re ready to take that step for themselves.

@Svasti– What made that moment (when you realized you could be free) different from every moment before? How did you realize it was possible to overcome PTSD – as in, how did your thoughts progress and finally lead you to that idea?
