PTSD Healing Thought: Being in the Present

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009 • PTSD Healing Thought of the Week

bernadette-devlin2We all get so used to the PTSD struggle: We accept it. We embrace it. We fight against it even while we hold it close.

We recede into the past at any given moment. We say we want to heal and then say we don’t have the courage to do so.

We are a mass of dichotomies, and why wouldn’t we be? We’re pulled into the past even while we attempt to push into the future.

I like this quote by Bernadette Devlin because it takes the dichotomies and links them so that they work together:

Yesterday I dared to struggle. Today I dare to win.

Seems to me this is another one of those PTSD mantras. The kind of statement that can immediately ground us in the present and focus us on the task at hand.
